LODGE FLOORPLAN

Douglas Cottage located on the main street in lovely Boat of Garten, one of the most charming and friendly villages in Strathspey. Locally known just as “Boat”, this little place is the final stop on the delightful Strathspey Steam Railway, running regularly from Aviemore. You’ll often hear the whistle and hiss of steam as the beautiful vintage engine pulls in.

A welcoming village with a wonderful community spirit (they built their own contemporary village hall recently which hosts one-off events and regular film nights), Boat is a great central place to base your holiday. Only a few minutes drive from Aviemore, it’s also convenient for visiting the other towns and villages in the area - Grantown on Spey, Nethy Bridge and Carrbridge are all less than 15 minutes away. This really is a wonderful location whether you like your Cairngorms break quiet and restful or action packed!

The cottage is in fact one of the old steam railway cottages built for workers on the line which originally linked Aviemore to Forres, and still retains many of its original features and old-world feel. However it has been cleverly and sympathetically restored to open it out to 21st century proportions. It provides plenty of light and enough space for a large family or group of six friends, and to ensure it’s warm and cosy enough for even the snowiest of Cairngorms winters.

The renovation also includes some fabulous contemporary touches - such as a statement wooden open staircase - which sits alongside its gorgeous period features such as the original stone hearths. Opposite the comfy living room with its wood burning stove, there is a snug room which is perfect for reading and playing games. Towards the back of the cottage are two bedrooms - a double with a king size bed and a twin - and a large family shower room.

The kitchen is large and welcoming, with a breakfast bar as well as a round dining table seating 6. In the warmer months you can throw open the French windows to the garden and enjoy drinks and dinner alfresco. It’s fully fenced so safe and secure for your children and pets. Off the kitchen is the utility room with washing machine and drying space for all your outdoor clothes. Up the stairs you’ll find the third bedroom - another double with king size bed - and another large bathroom with bath and shower.

Walkers and bike lovers are in for a treat, with immediate access to the wooded paths into Kinveachy Forest which make up part of the Speyside Way and National Cycle Route 7. At Douglas Cottage you are literally steps away from a fantastic independent bike shop, Ride Cairngorm, who can provide hire bikes and equipment for your two-wheeled adventures. You’ll never go hungry either, as you’re just over the road from the lovely 1896 Gallery Cafe, almost next door to the Boat Hotel and restaurant, and only a minute’s walk from one of our area’s most popular restaurants, Anderson’s. Of course Loch Garten with its breeding pair of ospreys is close by, giving the village its nickname of “the osprey village”.

Whatever you're looking for in your Cairngorms break - from an action and adventure packed week to simply some much needed rest and relaxation - you'll find that the best of Strathspey is on your doorstep at Douglas Cottage.

"Brilliant stay with two young children, cottage has everything we needed and more. Plenty to do in the area and lots of walks. Would love to return. " December 2019

"We have had such a lovely stay at Douglas Cottage during working on Autumnwatch. It was lovely to come home to a toasty home at the end of the day! Thank you for the bread and jam - it went down a treat. We cant wait to come back! " November 2019

"Fantastic stay! We've been this way numerous times over the past 5 years and this has been the most enjoyable. Lovely cottage with everything you need and more. Wonderful memories made and perfect for a family. Hope to make it back here. " November 2019

"We have just spent a wonderful week in Douglas Cottage. The location - goes without saying - is amazing. As is the cottage itself. It has everything we could possible need - so much so it has been a real home from home. Already we want to come back! Thank you for giving us a memorable time. " November 2019

"We had a really great stay at Douglas cottage. The house was spotlessly clean and beautifully presented. The owners left us a card and some fresh bread etc which was a nice touch. The house is really spacious. With 6 people and a dog we still had loads of room. Location is great with lots of nice walks nearby. Would definitely stay again" November 2019

"Great holiday home. Excellent location in village. Close to hotel and shop. We really liked the fact it was pet friendly. Wood burning stove was a treat in the evening. We stayed in November and had snow one night. Plenty of good walking and cycling trails within easy reach. Also the Speyside whisky trail is nearby if you want to sample some local malts." November 2019

"We've had a marvellous time here. 3 generations all well catered for. Cottage well equipped nicely furnished and decorated. Will be sure to recommend you and hope to be back. " October 2019

"An absolutely fantastic cottage. A great size for 6 people and has everything you’ll need for your stay and a lot more. Beautifully decorated and plenty of space. We loved the cottage. The bedrooms were a great size and the kitchen and communal eating area great for socialising and talking about the wonderful day we’d just had over a glass of wine or two. Or the equipment around the house is modern and easy to use. We loved the auto floor lighting on the landing. Less than a minutes walk away is the The Boat Hotel where we had an amazing dinner one night and also serves Cairngorm Brewery beer....at least a pint is compulsory, I’d say. The are so many things to do nearby. A stroll through the forest round the corner, the Steam railway close by, whiskey distilleries and many other things everyone can enjoy. Absolutely no complaints and happy to highly recommend Douglas Cottage." September 2019

"What an amazing cottage. We loved it........Loved Boat og Garten too. Good pub, beautiful walks. Thank you so much. " September 2019

"Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful home. We've had the most amazing 5 days. Your cottage is truly beautiful and Scotland is the most picturesque place I have visited in the whole world. Sad to leave but will be enjoying the West of Scotland on the way back down South. Would highly recommend Douglas Cottage 100% " July 2019

"This is an amazing holiday house. Really comfy and well equipped plus next to the pub and across from a really good shop. We ordered fresh fish which was delicious. Such a great location for walking and cycling but not far from the busy Aviemore centre. " July 2019

"Lovely cottage! Our first stay in Boat of Garten and we loved it. You can cycle everywhere from here and walk to the pub so we were all very happy. Our dachshund particularly liked his big friend in the garden! " July 2019

"Fantastic house and great location for walking and cycling especially with the kids. The Speyside Way to Aviemore takes no time and loch Garten only a short ride away. " April 2019
